For the 7th time in about nine seasons, the Coronado girls golf team earned a state title. In 2023, the Cougars won the 5A title at Mountain Falls Golf Club by 24 shots over Clark High. Mulhall recorded rounds of 68-69 to finish -7 and win by five shots over Hayoung Lee (Coronado), Brynn Kort (Coronado), Amy Cho (Palo Verde), and Angelina Huang (Clark).
“I stayed patient, and waited for the putts to go in at the right time,” Mulhall said. “It’s awesome. To win the team is also incredible. The entire tournament was awesome.”
The Cougars also won the Academic State title.
Coronado coach Joe Sawaia estimated that he has coach a combined 50 seasons of girls and boys high school golf, but this was his final time. In addition to coaching, he assist with tournament operations in his role with the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association.
“They’re all different and they’re all special,” Sawaia said about his state titles. “These girls put their stamp on this season and played great together, forged good relationships, welcomed in some new players. Every year is a challenge, but they stepped up and it has been incredible. We’ve had a great run at Coronado, a lot of history of winning, and this group here continued that.”
Dozens of SNJGA members and those who have played in the SNJGA competed in the 5A state finals in addition to the other levels in the state. The SNJGA was well represented.
Emmerson Hinds of Boulder City won the 3A state title while Mizara Norton (Meadows) was runner-up along with Abi Llewellyn (Virgin Valley). The Meadows won the team title over Virgin Valley. It was the school’s third-straight team title.
