Access is a huge barrier when it comes to kids playing golf. The innovative and highly successful Youth on Course program has broken down these barriers by providing access to courses around the country—and in Southern Nevada—with rounds for $5 or less for kids. Membership in Youth on Course is included with all Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association memberships.

Youth on Course, Southern Nevada—How to Take Advantage of $5 or Less Golf for Kids

As an SNJGA member, every young golfer has access to Youth on Course and the many Southern Nevada golf courses that offer rounds for $5—or in some cases, even free. Here is a complete listing of Youth on Course participating Southern Nevada courses.

One of the newest Youth on Course partners is Golf Galaxy. Kids can now use the golf simulators at Golf Galaxy for $5 plus get a free introductory golf lesson.

Hugh Smith, Senior Director of Partner Success for Youth on Course, understands firsthand how access to golf at an early age can change a life and form the foundation for long-term success.

“I was very fortunate to be around the game at a young age because my father was in the Army and served for nearly 30 years. He was a golfer, and we always had access to courses on the military bases where he was stationed,” Smith said. “In the Monterey area, there was a base that had two championship-level courses—the Bayonet and Black Horse—that I could play for just a few dollars. I would tag along when my dad and his Army buddies went out to play. Sometimes there were a few of us kids, sometimes just me.”

Those were formative years for Smith, and without that access, playing college golf and building a successful career in the game might not have been possible. Smith played at Jackson State University and later landed his dream job with the United States Golf Association. He chose that path rather than pursuing professional golf, even after winning several tournaments, including the National Minority Amateur Championship.

Now, Smith helps provide that same access he enjoyed to thousands of young golfers across the United States through Youth on Course. For 20 years, the program has expanded access to golf and the opportunities that come with it—breaking down barriers and opening doors for hundreds of thousands of young people. What began as a small pilot program has grown into the largest youth golf organization in the world, driven by dedicated partners, courses, and supporters. From record membership growth to millions of rounds played, the impact continues to expand each year.

“Through Youth on Course, golf is more affordable than ever, and it gives kids a real opportunity to try the game,” Smith said. “For me, that’s the biggest benefit—there are kids out there giving golf a shot simply because they can, and their parents can afford to let them play more than once. We send out a survey to our members every year about their experience with Youth on Course, and more than 70 percent say golf allows their family to spend more time together. Families are out playing the game together, which is fantastic. That’s a stat we really value—kids and parents doing something together outdoors, making it both affordable and fun.”

Smith also praised the efforts of the SNJGA in helping expand the Youth on Course mission.

“Our golf association partners are vital to our success, and when Youth on Course started in Northern California in the mid-1990s, we recognized the program’s potential,” Smith said. “We also understood that strong partnerships with golf associations across the country would be essential to our growth. Nevada—particularly Southern Nevada—was one of the first regions we expanded to as we grew beyond California. Ann Sunstrum and her team and board of directors have been terrific partners. They were part of that early expansion, and the relationship has been very positive. Together, we’ve impacted a large number of kids and built strong partnerships with courses throughout the region.”
