UNLV women’s golf sophomore Amber Chen was named the Mountain West Women’s Golfer of the Week while Demi Du collected the Freshman of the Week award, the league office announced on March 19. Chen and Du both receive the honors for the first time in their careers.
“I’m really excited about this honor, and I didn’t expect to be named Freshman of the Week, so it’s a great feeling,” Du said. “I’m just happy I can help the team and be part of it, especially getting the chance to go out and play in a lot of tournaments as a freshman. My goal is to play the best that I can and keep supporting my teammates. It means a lot to me to be a Rebel. I feel at home here, and I feel the support from everyone around me. It really feels like home.”
A Las Vegas product and SNJGA alumna, Du posted her best finish of the year by placing seventh in the Rebels’ team win. She finished with a career-low tournament score of 3-under 213, closing her outing with a career-low 4-under 68 in the final round. The Scarlet & Gray rookie also made a career-high 11 birdies.
Playing in the SNJGA and junior golf meant a lot to Du, and she knows it helped her reach the next level.
“I had a lot of fun playing those tournaments, and I met a lot of friends,” Du said. “Everyone was really nice and supportive, and they always wanted me to succeed. You gain experience and learn how to play under pressure when you play junior golf. You also get used to tournament golf.”
Du has played in seven tournaments as a freshman. On the course has been a success and bonds have been formed off the course, including the time spent in the state-of-the-art UNLV Women’s Golf Excellence Center located at the Las Vegas Country Club.
“We travel a lot, and I’ve had a great time with my teammates,” Du said. “We have fun, even in the practice room (excellence center), and we always cheer each other on during tournaments.”
