As part of the way to grow the game, the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association and the Southern Nevada Chapter, Southwest Section, PGA of America held the first Get Out and Golf Free Junior Clinic at Wildhorse in March 2025.

Top teaching professionals, amateurs, former members of the SNJGA, and other were hand to help kids get into the game.

“Giving a junior a sense of community and having somewhere to go to where they can coexist with their fellow friends is what this is all about,” said Gerry Montiel, PGA, Red Rock Country Club. “The fact that it’s free and we have so many professionals that are donating their time along with the amateurs, it really means a lot to have these kids out here.”

Daren Johnson with the SNJGA and a top amateur who played college golf at Univ. of Nevada says learning the game at a young age is important.

“If you want to play at another level. It’s just like learning anything,” Johnson said. “If you learn it as a kid, you can always tell people who’ve played since they were young They’re fluid. They’ve got natural movement just like ice skating. Kids who learn how to skate when they’re young, they can skate their whole lives. You can always tell someone who picks it up later. We’re trying to give that experience and that that ability to young kids to build that foundation and then take it as far as they want to go.”
