Drake Harvey closed the 2024 year with a win at the Southern Nevada Golf Association Winter Classic at Cascata. While that was a big deal for the high school junior to win against some of the best amateurs in the city, it wasn’t the highlight of 2024.
Harvey continued a family legacy by announcing his commitment to BYU to follow in is his grandfather and father’s footsteps to play golf at the university. Harvey is in the class of 2026 and will sign an official letter of intent later this year.
“I’m very excited and it’s going to be a great, great spot,” Harvey said. “I believe in Coach Miller and his vision for the program. It is definitely exciting because my family history there and my brother is up there.”
But there is plenty of work to do for Harvey prior to teeing it up in college. He is the two-time defending Nevada State 4A Champion and looks to three-peat later this year. He then hopes to close his career at Sky Pointe with four state titles. He also has eyes on winning on a local and national level in junior golf.
“Nevada golf has been really good at the high school level for a long time and I am thankful that I’ve been able to play against some really good players,” Harvey said. “My main goal is to win four state titles, and another goal is to get into the top five in my class nationally. I am 10th right now. I am also just trying to get more experience as a player playing against the best in juniors and also in some of the SNGA events. The SNJGA has been a big factor in making my game better. I had good competition when I was younger, so that definitely pushed me to get better. And something that I want to do this year is get onto the Pacific Coast Amateur team for the SNGA.”
Looking ahead to BYU, Harvey believes the Cougars will be very good.
“I think we’re gonna be a really good team my freshman year and I believe that the team has the players to compete for a National Championship,” Harvey said. “Competing at the highest level will be super cool to do. An individual goal is to be an All-American and try to be the best player that has played for BYU. The overall goal is to go pro, so I am trying to prepare for that and try to play the best that I can.”
Harvey continues to work with Brandon Bauman on his game and is dedicated to improvement.
