This wasn’t supposed to be THE year for the Coronado girls golf team. After three-straight Nevada 5A state titles, the Cougars lost 90 percent of their scorers from a year ago.
But along the way, someone forgot to let the 2024 team know, and they went out and won the school’s fourth in a row.
Coronado was led by Sophie Medlin, who finished as the runner up to Maddie Perez, the individual medalist from Faith Lutheran. The Cougars won by nine shots over Bishop Gorman in the event played at the historic Boulder City Golf Course. Clark was third while Faith Lutheran was fourth.
The Cougars team was Medlin, Justice Pantelas-Hemmers, Berlin Biddinger, Grace Oh and Alexa Hart.
“It’s really cool to win … I wish I could’ve won the individual, but it’s okay,” Medlin said. “We won as a team, so that made up for it.”
Maddie Perez, Faith Lutheran
Perez is only a sophomore and finished 2-under par to win the prestigious title. Perry Sage from Palo Verde was third.
“It feels great,” Perez said. “Yesterday I really struggled with my wedges and my putting, so I worked on that a lot yesterday and then today it really helped me out.”
